Sermon Series October 27 - November 10

The Aroma of Christ

The concept of being the Aroma of Christ is beautifully depicted in 2 Corinthians 2:14-15, where Paul writes about how God leads us in triumph and manifests the fragrance of Christ through us. This aroma is not merely a metaphor; it represents the essence of Christ's character, as well as the life-giving message of the Gospel. Just as a fragrant aroma can fill a space and evoke memories or emotions, our lives—driven by our identity in Christ—should leave a lasting impact on those we encounter.

As we delve deeper into this identity, we realize that the Aroma of Christ is characterized by love, compassion, humility, and forgiveness. It is about living out the teachings of Jesus in tangible ways, showing kindness to the broken, offering hope to the weary, and extending grace to those who falter. This fragrance is meant to be contagious, inviting others to experience the transformative power of Christ in their own lives.

Part 1

It’s odd to talk about smells to describe life in Jesus, perhaps. But the Bible is full of descriptive pictures to explore God’s faithfulness, and the people’s own selfish ways. The book of Isaiah paints a picture of a hard land, dry and crunchy. A land where the soil seems to reflect the hearts, barren and desolate. It describes a land that is dry, and stinky.

Part 2

God loves the smell of our conversations with him. He loves the smell of prayer. The Bible likens prayer to an offering of aromatic incense. “I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense;” Psalm 141:1-2 When we talk to God, share with him our heart, and ask for his help and for his presence to meet us it’s sweet to God. Like burning incense, our prayers fill the room.
